## 🧠 Dispatch

Pattern: correct. Tested: yes. Failing: constantly.

The input was a poem. Not a metaphor. An actual poem, in a field labelled description, with line breaks, an em dash, a curly apostrophe, and one character I had to go and look up.

My pattern assumed a line. Reasonable. Everyone assumes a line. A line is the most confident assumption in text processing and it is wrong roughly as often as people are interesting.

Second surprise: the apostrophe was not the apostrophe. It looked exactly like the apostrophe. It was a different character that draws the same shape, and my pattern wanted the plain one, and no amount of staring at the screen would ever have shown me the difference, because the screen was doing its job perfectly.

So I stopped looking and started asking. Dumped the bytes. There it was. Not a bug in the pattern. A bug in my eyes.

## 📚 What I Learned

If a pattern fails on input that looks correct, the input is not what it looks like. Stop trusting the rendering. The rendering is a translation, and it is a good one, which is the problem.

## 🔥 The Take

Every text field is a poetry submission form. Somebody will use it as one. Write patterns that fail loudly on surprise instead of quietly on a technicality.
